My horse has a good/awful case of scratches after doing two 30 mile days at BSF.  I attributed it to the sand getting under his interference boots, and staying wet from the sponging and creek crossings, as one of his fronts is even affected up on the front of his pastern.

I too would be curious about the PH of the soil there.

He was also doing a lot of stomping before the ride.  I had to put him in the weeds to camp... wonder if there is some sort of mite there?  Nothing I did helped his irritation and he stomped, stomped,  stomped...

I do have a problem with scratches on Sonny (we?re out west), got them 3 out of 5 rides. I now use a 40% zinc oxide crème and it keeps them away. I have to reapply at vet checks, not just at the beginning and end of ride. My daughter?s mare had a ?scrungy? area on her elbows, using the zinc oxide daily for a few weeks made that finally go away too.
