[RC] Horse deaths - Lynn WhiteSomeone on this string mentioned that there were 10 horse deaths this year. Though it may be the highest, it may be high because there were just so many more "starts" this year. A much more accurate death rate would be horse deaths per the number of horses that started an endurance ride for a particular time period. With all the data at the fingertips of AERC I would bet that the acual deaths per horses starting has generally declined. I would almost bet money that deaths per horses started in 2006 is way lower than in say 1970. There are always going to be inexperienced riders that over ride their horses (I know this because I WAS one once) and accidents. What nobody seems to be commenting on is AERC's untiring effort to educate new riders and tighten the "fit to continue" criteria. This in my opinion has prevented many unnecessary horse deaths. But this sport is not idiot proof, and the best intentions of ride managers and AERC can not make up for over-competative riders that continuously over ride their horses while managing to fly below the radar. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Got a little couch potato?
