[RC] older horses, when is it time? - Lacey Grey

I have been reading this with interest as I have the joy of caring for a 40 yr old
Arab/Quarter horse gelding.
He was "gifted " to me in a will, I think because the owner knew that I tend to never sell a horse!
Charlie Brown is 90% blind, but can still find a full feed bucket. The best thing in his life is a little Peruvian mare who shares his pasture.
When he wants hay, he nudges her side and she leads him to a vacant pile of hay, then goes back to hers.
When I take her out for a ride and he stands in the lean-to until we hit the pavement on the way home, then he starts screaming and trotting the fenceline.
My husband laughs, and says he can tell when I am half a mile away!
There will be a time when it is time to put him to rest, I watch his condition carefully.
He will be put down by our vet, here on the top of a hill, and with the other horses nearby.
I too believe, that before the quality of life sucks, it is the time to give the final care to an animal
that owes us nothing.
Until then, happy trails to all the aged ponies!
Lacey Grey
