Re: [RC] Old Horses and weighing decisions......... - LindakWhat helps me when making the tough decision to put one of my old horses or dogs down is I think to myself......if he/she were living in the wild, the natural laws of nature would have ended their life much much sooner. The old, weak, injured horses/dogs are part of the food chain for wolves, bears, coyotes, mountain lions, birds, ants etc. So any of the time and money I spend on keeping them alive after they are sick or injured gives them a longer lifetime than they would have had, if they were wild. Once I decide I've spent enough time and money giving them additional life, (whether it is one, five, or even ten additional years in one case) they are humanely euthanized. Unfortunately in So. Calif. we don't have the option of shooting them and leaving them out on the range to feed the other critters, but I would choose that if it were possible. My first horse was 30 when she developed Cushing's. I kept her going until she was 35 and then had her euthanized as she was having a very hard time getting up and down each day. It hurts to say goodbye to someone you love.....person or animal, but it needs to be done, and the longer we live, the more goodbyes we have to endure. From Linda-kHave a horse lovin' day!!! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
