RE: [RC] Nutrition - Chastain, Shannon L.MJ = Mega-joules 620 kcal = 2.6 MJ 150 MJ = 35827 kcal So, if 1 lb alfalfa hay has 620 kcal energy: 35827 kcal x 1 lb hay = 58 lb alfalfa hay per day 620 kcal That's a lot of horse food. Might suggest supplementing with oats, etc which may have more energy per pound. This website is nifty http://www.digitaldutch.com/unitconverter/ for conversions. -----Original Message----- From: ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ridecamp-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Don Huston Sent: Friday, September 07, 2007 11:54 AM To: ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [RC] Nutrition A question for you nutrition experts. I have an article that suggests that a 450kg (1000lb) endurance horse needs 150-165 MJ/day of digestible energy to maintain good condition while training for and riding 80km (50mi) endurance rides. I have a hay analysis that suggests alfalfa has 620 kcal/lb of energy. My question is how do I convert kcal to MJ?
