We learned this type of stop when we were kids: anchor one hand on the
neck and then pull up on the other. It works with most horses, but I did
ride one mare that it had no effect on what so ever. The only way to
stop her was to circle - not always a possibility.
So true, it isn't always a possibility.
Even if that might happen, the Cavalry stop will always be my first choice
from now on. My horse also knows the one-rein stop, so at least I do
have choices. Always good to have a backup plan.
