[RC] What we CAN do about our retired horses..long - rides2far

When I asked her the difference, she said
the second one was never a pleasure to ride, and they did not
consider him> > safe to pass on.

I know exactly what she means. My other endurance horses were very in
demand when they quit competing. Nice, "sounder than most" horses who
loaded well, would go anywhere, had seen everything, etc. etc. So, I'd
never kept a retired one until Kaboot. It's a shame to waste a good
riding horse when he can still be used.

No such second career for Kaboot. He never, ever calmed down. If
anything, he was more wired at his last few rides than ever before
because I'd been tricking him in to missing the start trying to slow down
and he had tantrums over it. He's as crazy as ever, except now he's well
rested. In a ring, I'd put just about anybody on him, but would never
condemn him to a second career in the ring. He'd hate it. He is NOT safe,
or fun, for just anyone riding the trail. He will be mine forever, but
that's OK. He's the one I wanted to keep anyway. :-)

I tried to buy a couple of my old horses back for other people who were
looking for well broke horses and the owners said no way...they wouldn't
part with them for the world. They were better behaved...but I'd have
much rather had Kaboot's stubborn streak when doing a 100!

Angie (*hoping* 7 will be the best of both worlds!!!!)
