Re: [RC] [RC] Another shoe ? - Linda Marins----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan Cushing" <5sus@xxxxxxx> My farrier and I have realized that the metal in my horse's shoes just plain does not last like 'the good old days'. I am wearing out shoes in 4 weeks. Does anyone know of a company that puts out longer lasting shoes??? Susan Cushing There was a major consolidation on the horse shoe industry around 10-12 years ago. All the well-known independent forges like Diamond and St. Croix were bought up by several international conglomerates. Why? I haven't a clue. Last time I discussed this with my old farrier (c. 1998--he was big into American Farrier's Association politics, an insider who heard about such things), he said that the conglomerates were continuing to allow the separate factories to produce their separate shoes under their separate brand names. But that might have changed. They might have closed certain forges, shipped production to India or China, and just kept the brand name. Which shoe brand does your farrier use? He could ask his supplier. I, myself, would ask over on one of the farrier web site/bboards like http://www.horseshoes.com/forums/ In fact, I just found an article about consolidation: http://www.horseshoes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5249 If the AFA convention held in Chattanooga several years ago is any indication, there are still plenty of truly independent forges out there. Although they seem to mostly make aluminum shoes. Linda Marins =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
