My very high level Sound/Technical Editor sister in law and high level 
graphic designer son both love their Macs.  I took a grad level course 
years ago on computers in libraries.  The lab had only macs and no one 
who could tutor us.  I just got frustrated because, like you, I do best 
if someone shows me.
The video editing you're doing sounds like lots of fun.  If this winter 
is a really rainy one (here's hoping!!!), I might have to borrow my 
video camera back from my daughter and play around with editing stuff. 
But then I might have to get a Mac!
