I know this thread is long in the tooth,  and I am not against horse slaughter but if you think that you can't get a decent horse at an auction go to: http://www.columbiabasinequinerescue.org/DEF-Home.asp 
 
Check out "success stories" as well as "available horses".
 
They pull these horses that got purchased at the sales by kill buyers and taken to a feed lot to await shipping.
