Re: [RC] Sponging question - Truman PrevattIf your horse's core temp is 102.5 and the water is 75 to 80 (quite warm), then the difference is over 20 degrees. Even 80 degree water can provide for a significant heat transfer off a hot horse's body. Of course it's not as good as 60 degree water but it's a whole lot better than nothing. You have to wipe the water off (which you can do with the sponge on the trail) no matter how cold it is when you put it one - it will warm up because it is absorbing heat.Back at camp add rubbing alcohol to the 80 degree water and the mixture provides significant cooling.
