Garlinghouse, DVMI thought salt blocks were not a good idea for horses since their tongues aren't as rough/tough as cattle tongues, so many horses won't lick blocks even if they need the salt. Loose salt is supposed to be much more horse friendly. : - ) Kristi If the salt requirement isn't huge, then most horses do fine just licking a block. Their tongues aren't as tough as a cows, but still pretty tough (after all, it manipulates 20-40 pounds of dry forage a day just fine). Most horses also learn to bite the block if they need to. My opinion is that if the horse is working hard enough that they need to bite the darn thing to get enough, then I've asked them for enough effort for my benefit, and yes, throwing some loose salt into the feeder is more horse friendly and an easy enough thing to do for them in exchange for doing what I ask them to do for me.
