RE: [RC] Salt - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVM

I thought salt blocks were not a good idea for horses
since their tongues aren't as rough/tough as cattle
tongues, so many horses won't lick blocks even if they
need the salt. Loose salt is supposed to be much more
horse friendly. : - )

If the salt requirement isn't huge, then most horses do fine just licking a
block. Their tongues aren't as tough as a cows, but still pretty tough
(after all, it manipulates 20-40 pounds of dry forage a day just fine).
Most horses also learn to bite the block if they need to. My opinion is
that if the horse is working hard enough that they need to bite the darn
thing to get enough, then I've asked them for enough effort for my benefit,
and yes, throwing some loose salt into the feeder is more horse friendly and
an easy enough thing to do for them in exchange for doing what I ask them to
do for me.
