Re: [RC] OT, feeding grass clippings - rides2farSince hay is just dried grass clipping, feeding grass clippings can be Okay> or Not Okay depending on how it's handled after cutting. One thing I've learned about the Tifton 44 Coastal that we feed is that I can NOT feed it immediately when it comes out of the field. If I even sweep the hay trailer off into the field I will get a horse with a gassy colic. This is cured hay, but it's not safe to feed yet. Once it sits in the barn at least one week, preferably 2 it's fine to feed. My uncle told me it "has to go through a heat". I don't know about that, but it does need to sit a while. An awful lot of the folks who claim Coastal causes colics have brought new hay home from the field and fed it immediately. I'd be afraid it was the same with bermuda grass clippings.
