When we had extreme weather conditions on the Castle Rock ride some years ago,105 degrees at the ride camp, 115 degrees up on the ridges, plus coastal humidity, our head vet stopped the ride at about 3 PM. The 70 mile riders who came into the lunch VC (50 miles) got 50 mile credit, and any 50s who were still out on the trail were met by ride management and told to take the easiest and coolest trail back to camp. We gave completions, but not placings, to those we re-routed and placings and awards to those very few who actually finished the entire distances in time.

OK, OK some of you may not think these are extreme conditions, but on the central coast of CA, they ARE!

The Old Dominion 30 mile LD only had 2 finishers out of 43 entries who came in under the AERC time limits for 30 mile rides.
