I suspect that some (not all) of what looks like hanging on with the
reins, is actually the rider maintaining firm contact to keep the horse going
in the right direction.
I’d probably be one to keep the reins taut in a situation like
that. However, having a choice, I ‘d never ride over Cougar Rock.

I'm with you Kristi. How some of those horses made it up despite
the pulling pressure in their mouths is amazing!
You mention that everyone went "around" it. To me that
looked to be the "correct route" and the one horse that went left,
around the other direction, seemed to be off course. Can someone elaborate.
All the horses down below were going around Cougar Rock on a lower
trail on the right.
