Re: [RC] Pan Ams - Steph TeeterThe US didn't field a team for a variety of reasons. Largely the expense, since riders would have had to pay their own travel (horse and rider and crew). Two of us (Cia Reese and I) were going to ride local horses, but weren't qualified (hadn't done an FEI 100 in the last 24 months within CoC time) to enter! And a couple of the riders had horse issues arise.Earlier in the year USEF decided to fund riders to go to the European Championship (Portugal, September) rather than the Pan Ams since they thought it would be good to give US riders experience competing in Europe. This is one of the 'fallouts' from the FEI decision in 2006 to only allow each Federation to field one team of 4 riders for continental championships. The US (and other Federations) can no longer field a team of 4 from each region. And since we (the Americas) are so geographically large and spread out, Pan Ams can no longer draw enough entries to make it worthwhile to host the competition. If we were to hold a Pan Am in the USA or Canada, we'd essentially be looking at a competition between 8 horses and riders - a team from Canada and a team from USA - nobody else (Mexico, all of South America) could ship their own horses such distances so they'd be looking at leasing horses - and then we'd probably have no more entries than the Brazil Pan Am did. It looks like only gold and silver was awarded. Now looking more closely, were there only three (senior) national teams competing? Maybe I am not reading the results correctly. If this is correct, it is really too bad only three nations were able to send teams for such a prestigious competition. Is there any particular reason for this, perhaps quarantine/travel issues? I thought I had read that a few months back in a USEF publication that the US was sending a team and that Vonita Bowers was to be the chef d' equipe for both the Pam Ams and European Championships. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
