Re: [RC] [RC] teaching horses to pony - Karen Sullivanif you have a horn.... I used to take a wrap and a half around the horn, using a smooth leadrope... and then just close my hand on the part where the end leaves the horn and lies against the rope to the horse...if you got into trouble...just open your hand and the rope would slide away......also if you do use horn for this, make darn sure your saddle is cinched snug and a good breastcollar is a good idea. I had to do this due to bad shoulder from ponying horses <g> I ususally pony somebody nearly every day.... also helps if the horse you are ponying from will neck rein, and okay with rope pressure under trail in case baby takes a detour to the other side (should not do this unless rope is too long). Crupper trail your mustang and you won't have any rope surprises. I have ponied all the babies and new horses...and end up ponying off them too... Once they pony nicely and give to pressure reliably....you can experiment with giving more rope for going over rough terrain....and that is another beauty of ponying...take them over creeks, bridges, down roads, etc. Keep in mind I am also a huge fan of letting baby run free, give you have a safe place and no other riders around....there is nothing else to teach them confidence and leaning where to place their feet and negotiage terrain... I have been taking Minuet (the Arab filly) on three-four mile "hikes" where I walk and lead her. She trusts me and is okay with giving to pressure. Hermano, the mustang, is not a kicker unless he's playing with my wife's mustang, Diego. I want to thank all who have given advice. I will heed what you've said, particularly Angie's input, about rope burn to hands AND other parts. Any one else with ideas? --Dave -----Original Message----- From: Diana Peterson [mailto:diana2507@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2007 4:18 PM To: Smith, Dave Subject: RE: [RC] teaching horses to pony well...i am ponying my 10 onth old foal for about 6 month now...I am ponying of my gelding ... first you need the ridden horses respect... they are not allowed to kick ... if they do there needs to be a consequence. I use a 12 foot Parelli lead rope to pony my foal...i started in the pasture...you want some space when you start this....Also you NEED to teach the foal to " give to pressure" or it will pull your arm out... VERY IMPORTANT !!!! before you get on your horse to actually do this... I also did a lot of leading him all over the farm so he trusts me when we go for a walk ,So when i started to actually pony him from my gelding there where very little issues. Off course because of his age we have not done any training rides with him. But that will follow late this summer. I would do lots of walking so he/she can get the idea...and add speed slowly. Diana :-) Good Luck From: "Smith, Dave" <dsmith@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [RC] teaching horses to pony Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2007 15:44:43 -0800 I have a seven month old Arab filly that I'd like to teach to pony as I begin conditioning my mustang in the coming months for our first LDs and competition. Since I'm a newbie and never ponied before, I'd appreciate some advice. I'd like to know the following: at what age should I wait before teaching her to pony? What is the trail distance I should limit her to the first year? I expect to do the initial training of both the filly and the mustang in my round pen. What techniques should I use to assure that my mustang doesn't fear ponying the filly? What can I do to assure her safety so he doesn't kick back at her? Are there any written or video references you might suggest on teaching horses to pony? What have I forgotten to ask? Thanx for your help. --Dave Smith _________________________________________________________________ Valentine's Day -- Shop for gifts that spell L-O-V-E at MSN Shopping http://shopping.msn.com/content/shp/?ctId=8323,ptnrid=37,ptnrdata=24095& tcode=wlmtagline =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
