Re: [RC] CRI and steths vs. handhelds - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

Regarding recent discussion on CRI, has anyone else has
experienced acertain level of subjectivity in conducting of CRI's and
pulse taking ingeneral?

Only problem I've had with a vet is an inexperienced ride vet taking
the second CRI pulse immediately when the horse gets back from the
trot-out instead of waiting out the full minute. When I said
something he was defensive, but then he didn't seem concerned that my
horses' CRI jumped up since everyone else's had too (with his
method).

I just eased over and mentioned it to the head vet since I knew he
would have better luck not seeming threatening and could explain
proper proceedure. Sometimes a new vet is so paranoid that we're
going to argue that they put up a tough front and won't negotiate.

One of the only other times I argued with a vet was when my horse
wasn't down when I entered a fairly empty P&R area. They let me stay
there rather than exit and re-enter, waited a minute then he was
down. Since the pulse in-timer had written my time down as the time I
entered the first time, they gave me the time I would have had if
he'd been down right off. I tried to explain but the timer thought I
was trying to take advantage and shut me down. Actually, I was trying
*not* to take advantage! Had the same problem with Joe Long once when
I was a timer. Took him forever to convince me to *add* 10 min. to
his hold time. :-)

P.S. I've never seen a vet use a hand held, but if you ever have some
timer getting "60" for every horse they check, see if they're wearing
their wrist watch on the same hand they're holding the thing with.
Sometimes they're checking their watch, not the horse.
