Re: Fwd: Re: [RC] Feed question - Diane Trefethen"geckogal", I am not surprised that you got "private hate mail".Your posts did not politely disagree with Barbara McCrary's position, they were all out attacks. Your "hate mail" was NOT for holding a different point of view than she; it was for being rude and hostile. In your first response you said, "I don't need anything but good quality beef and I will be fine" followed by, "I can't believe people think that! Ignorance is bliss I guess" and in a subsequent post, "My analogy was the reference to "only eating" one thing. Meaning: You cannot have a balanced diet by only eating meat. Nor can a horse have a balanced diet by "only eating" hay." 1) The "I can't believe people think that! " and "Ignorance is bliss I guess" comments were unadulterated insults. Ironically, Barbara has a hell of a lot more experience with horses and other livestock than you so if ANYONE is entitled to talk down in a demeaning fashion to someone, it is she, not you. However, she is a kind person and would never stoop to such belittling and hurtful comments. 2) When you are refering to another person's post, and you use quotation marks, it is expected that the person being quoted actually used the words you put in quotation marks. Barbara didn't so your " 'only eating' hay" reference is a lie, a crass attempt to put words in Barbara's mouth that she did not say. Totally cold and below the belt. 3) Your words quoted above, and you DID use exactly those words, imply that Barbara said that hay and hay alone constitutes a balanced diet. Another untruth. She said, and I QUOTE, " If the horse starts to lose weight, feed more hay and maybe some extra...beet pulp, rice bran, oats..." So she IS in favor of giving horses more than just hay, contrary to the picture you painted. 4) What Barbara IS against is the willy-nilly feeding of supplements, over and above feed that "is good quality" and "most likely has all the necessary nutritional stuff." Notice she said "feed", not hay. And in this, many of us agree. Feeding supplements with poor quality feed is like electrolyting your poorly conditioned horse in the hopes that the electrolytes will allow him to finish a ride. Both electrolytes and supplements have a legitimate place in horse husbandry but not spending the time to properly condition your horse and then substituting electrolytes instead isn't one of them. Similarly, chintzing on the quality of your feed and then trying to make up for it with supplements is NOT a valid use of those substances. Finally, I reiterate that your "hate mail" was not because you favor a varied diet or the judicious use of supplements. It was because you were rude and insulting to a fellow Ridecamper, one who has a vast breath of experience accumulated over many years. To hurl as a parting comment the further insult, "obviously you are stuck in your ways" was incredibly boorish and hateful.
