RE: [RC] coyotes - heidi

Barbara is correct.  Coyotes will also begin to eat a calf before it gets entirely out of the birth canal.  Fortunately, horses tend to foal faster than cows calve, so rarely have a problem with coyotes when foaling.  But an inexperienced mare may lose a foal to coyotes if they are there right at foaling before the foal is able to travel well.  Losses of older foals to coyotes are rare.

They will also take calves.  Often they work in pairs and close in on a calf...get it away from the herd and then attack.  We lost at least 4 calves from our small herd one year.  One incident was observed by a passing neighbor, who called us and within 20 minutes we were there...too late.
