Someone may be playing in the water
trough. I have a stallion that is soaking his feet daily. Let's just
say the farrier told us his feet were getting to soft from all the soaking he
does.
Last year we had a visiting mare and she
would play in the trough as well, and we had a similar
problem.

trough Mystery
Around here, deer drink from the horse water if the stream
is dry.
I'm hoping someone can help me solve a mystery. I have a 90 gallon
water trough for two horses and the last few days I have gone out at night to
feed and found the thing DRY. I can't figure out where the water is
going because I can't imagine that, even in this heat (95-ish), two horses
could drink 90 gallons of water in less than 12 hours!
Here are the variables:
The pump went out on the well, so I recently switched to house
water. I suspect it tastes better.
I fixed the trough with a wooden frame so that it can't get tipped
over.
I removed the hose after filling in case it was backflowing and
creating a suction.
I saw the chickens drinking out of it, but 3 chickens shouldn't be able
to hold that much water either! No other critter has access to that
trough (that I know of).
Neither horse is working hard.
All last summer I never had the thing go dry in less than 24 hrs. with
the same two horses
Everyone put your Nancy Drew cap on and please help me solve this
mystery!
