RE: [RC] Kudzoo Hay Revisited - Peery, SandraThats what it sounds like to me. I'm pretty sure you would only be able to feed it to horses immediately after it is made because it does rot and do the fermentation thing. Most people here use it only for cattle, usually the dairy cattle. My grandfather ran and my uncles now run a dairy farm in Michigan. One of the staples they feed the cattle is silage, which is the entire corn plant mulched up and then stored in a silo. It is kind of wet and the cattle love it. It smells wonderful (ok, its a great farm type smell). As a side benefit, there is a drain in the bottom of the silo, which drains into the cattle yard. The liquid drains out of the silo and ferments, and the cattle drink it and get a little stoned. They love it.

I remembered that when I was a kid my dad used to buy my pony bags of "Crushing". It was apparently corn, shucks, stalks & everything else thrown into something like a mulcher. It looked like a very fine hay mulch. My pony ate it, slowly and not real enthusiastically. I hated it because I was comparing it to sweet feed....but as a hay substitute I kinda wonder now how that would rate and if they still bag that up for cows. Anybody know?
