Re: [RC] 'Grand Prix' style finish is not endurance - Diane TrefethenHi Patty,All AERC competitions have a time limit. The time limit is set BEFORE the ride and is based on the DISTANCE of the ride (see the AERC rule book for a chart on times and distances). These times are based on maintaining an average speed of approximately 5 mph. I am assuming that at Scottsdale they had cutoff times for leaving each vet check. These cutoff times are based on the expectation that unless you override your horse, you will not be able to finish the ride in the time allowed for that distance. The Grand Prix concept is very different. You do NOT know how much time you will have to finish the ride. Ride management simply stops all riders at their next vet check, after about 15 horses have crossed the finish line. In AERC, if you can average about 5 mph, you will finish the ride - and most riders do, ergo, "To Finish is to Win". With the Grand Prix concept, all they care about is closing down the ride after the winning horses have been determined. If you aren't in the top 15 or so, you're just chopped liver. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
