When the 35 year old pony our children grew up needed a little help to end
her days,  we made sure that a local Wildlife Images was ready for her, then
my husband shot her at home and we loaded her in the truck and took her
there.  He did cover her with a tarp so that no small children were
traumatized as he passed  through town.

That may seem brutal to some, but he had the stomach for it, and that way he
was sure that she died quickly and humanely in a comfortable and familiar
setting.

We liked the "useful in life/useful in death" concept of it.
