Re: [RC] CPK - Truman PrevattWhen I did the ROC in '96 the UGA vet team was there performing a study - eating up some of the big bucks the USOC gave them to support the equine events in Atlanta in '96.They took blood before, after and one hour after the ride. The horses that didn't finish they drew back at camp when they arrived back. I showed my vet the results. The CPK was of the greatest interest. The horses that didn't finish had huge CPK values even if they didn't show any clinical signs of tying up. But more interesting was most horses that had elevated CPK at the finish line, but they rapidly subsided at the one hour after finish blood draw. My vet's eyes bugged out at the results when I showed him. What he said was the average finish line CPK of the horses that finished would concern him greatly, but they dissipated quickly. The horses that didn't finish were off the scale and he was amazed they didn't have to treat all of them.
