[RC] Fusion of Ankle Joint (for human) - Lisa Douglass

I have a friend who is an extremely active rider with a 'mountain goat' Arab
who is being told by her doctor she needs her ankle fused due to arthritis.
Since the joint is bone-against-bone, the doctors can no longer insert a
needle for cortisone injections.

Has anyone had an ankle fusion done and still maintained active riding on a
very high energy horse? Did you change stirrups or any other gear? Or,
were you told to fuse but you chose another <successful> solution?

Also, my horse has been diagnosed with arthritis in her spine, near the loin
area. She's currently being treated holistically with acupuncture and
anti-spasmodics (muscles on both sides of her loins were spasming). I'm
also treating her with Corta-FLX, though I know there isn't much joint fluid
in the spine. We're lucky enough in our area to have an excellent DVM who
is also a holistic vet, and I'm seeing some very nice progress. Anyway, I'm
curious if anyone out there also has been in this situation with your horse,
and what you did as a long term solution to keep your horse active and pain
free.

Thank you!
