Re: [RC] OD meeting - Eric RueterIsn't it Biltmore where you enter the pulse box get your ride card -- oops slip of paper marked with the pulse time and get in line for the vet, and then when you get to the vet they take your pulse? If your pulse is down then you get the time on the slip of paper. If it isn't down then you have to go to the back of the waiting on a vet line. Then when you make it to the vet a second time, and it still isn't down (your second strike) then you must exit the line again (if it is down then you still get the original time - you have just lost the time you were standing in line). I am not sure if you can get a "new" pulse time at this point and head back into the line a third time or not (but I believe that it is possible). I think the two strikes deal is to keep people from "fudging" and entering the pulse box prior to their horse being down, with the expectation that by the time they reach a vet, they will have met parameters. At least that is the way I understand that the Biltmore system works I could be wrong, just ask my wife. Never been to the OD so I do not know if this is what they were trying to duplicate. The big problem I see is when you get the first few horses in. Some, take the time to cool their horses and get them to criteria before they go to the P&R/Vet. Others (who are obviously more competitive or ,,) take their horses straight to the P&R/Vet, since there is no line for the front runners, they just hang out (no looping through the line no lost time) until the vet gets the correct numbers. People who are not pushing their horses as hard, do find a line and it does cost them time if they have to move through the line more than once. We do *not* use this method at the Big South Fork Ride. thanx eric Eric Rueter Rueter Consulting, Inc. What vet would want to be the one to pass a horse that,s not doing well... Everytime a horse dies, everyone is screaming PROTECT THE HORSE!!!!! Well that,s what they trying to do til it gets in the way of your personal goals then the vets are the bad guys.No one complaining about this rule here on Ridecamp would be upset if a Head Vet decided, given difficult, ambient conditions, to take some extra precautions to protect the horses. But the rule that is being discussed here has nothing to do with VETTING. The number of times a horse's pulse is taken has nothing to do with his veterinary status. If my horse's pulse is taken 1 minute after I arrive at a VC, again 2 minutes later and a third time 2 minutes after that with all 3 readings decreasing from 72 to 66, those readings hardly suggest that my horse is in trouble and needs to be pulled. On the other hand, if I wait the full half hour before having my horse's pulse taken ONCE and it is still at 70, that would be a cause for concern... not to mention a DQ under rules 2.1.6.2 and L6.2.1.2. Furthermore, it isn't usually the vets who take pulses for the gate into hold; P&R people do. So it isn't a vet that will decide a horse is DQ'd... a P&R person will. It seems to be the general feeling here that giving a P&R person, whose eyes may be bad or whose watch may run fast or who may be a little less objective (and certainly less under the microscope) than a vet, the ultimate power at a ride, ie, to disqualify someone, without review or recourse, is not reasonable. And if the DQ CAN be protested to a vet, then it is 3 strikes, not 2 and I could just wait till I was SURE my horse was down (or 1/2 hour was up) to protest the DQ to a vet, thus totally negating the effect of the rule. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
