RE: [RC] Adequan injection sites - heidiThe top of the rump provides a terrific muscle mass for injections, but is also a pretty horrid place if anything does go wrong. Problems are rare, but when they do occur, abcesses in the rump muscles are a real nightmare, because there is nowhere for them to drain.
IMO the back of the thigh is the anatomically-ideal area for giving injections, although it is the trickiest from the perspective of the one giving the shots.
The neck is a poor site for injections, despite its common useage--the muscle layers are thin, there are too many other structures that one can accidentally hit, and the fascial planes can direct abcesses into the chest cavity.
The other choice is the pectoral muscles--easy for the one giving the shot, and ideal downward drainage in the event of abcessation.
