It is not at all uncommon for them to drink their fill first, then eat their salt/elyte mix and then go back out without drinking again. However, if you are giving the elytes to encourage drinking then I can see where dosing well in advance of the water source would be necessary.If the horse has already gotten a big drink I see no problem in dosing with elytes after.
