Re: [RC] [RC] Q3. Logbooks - Jay RandleHi D'ArcyThank you for your request. If you want to have a look at examples of Aussie Logbooks, please visit my website at: www.freewebs.com/splendacrest and go to the "Mentoring" page. I have put copies of some logbooks there so that you can see what we use here. The first is a picture of the front covers of two logbooks. Our novice horses have a 'blue' logbook, and once they have successfully completed 3 x 80km rides at a restricted pace, the logbook cover is changed to a 'yellow' colour. In any ride, therefore, it is easy to see at a glance if the horse is a Novice or an Open Endurance horse. The second photo is a copy of the ID page, which must be completed by a Vet. This identification is quite detailed, and is designed so that no substitution of horses can possibly occur. The third photo is a copy of the left hand side of each page. Here the main details of each ride are entered, including the distance (80km), the rider name and membership number, the rider's weight (78.8kg), the rider's riding division (in this case, Junior), the final riding time (6:46), and the placing (2nd). The start time of the ride (5am) is then followed by the results of the pre-ride Vet check (the day before the ride). Read from left to right along each row, you will see that this horse pulsed at 32 pre-ride, respiration was 8, and temperature was 36.3 degrees Celcius. Under these entries you will see the time the horse arrived at the first Vet check (42kms in 3hrs 42mins), and then the pulse at this stage (which was 40bpm). Respiration was 8. Again, after the second leg (another 38km, this time in 3hrs 4 mins), the Vet check recorded a pulse of 40bpm, and respiration at 8 once again. Each of these Vet Checks was done 30 minutes after arrival at the ride base. You can see that the arrival time is listed (8:42 and 12:46 respectively), and then the Vet time is also recorded (9:12 and 1:16 respectively). The fourth photo is a copy of the right hand side of each page. Here the horse is checked against a number of parameters, including Mucous Membranes, Capillary and Jugular Refill time, Skin Recoil time, Heart Sounds, Gut Sounds, Anal Tone, Muscle Tone, Girth Withers and Back, Leg Injuries, Gait, and an Overall rating. These are marked from A - C, with A being good, B being average, and C being not good. The Capillary refill and Skin Recoil parameters are marked from 1 to 3, with each measure being 1 second. On the right you will see the Veterinary Comments area. The "FTS" in the first row means Fit To Start, and the "FTC" means Fit To Continue. All horse must be marked Fit To Continue at each Vet check in order to pass. In this area some Vets will also make other notes, such as "Slight rubbing on left hind heel", or "Trot action very wide behind", or "Tired, but OK", etc. Some of these remarks can be good, and sometimes they write stupid things. It is good if you have a horse that has a consistently 'funny' gait, as if a number of Vets note it in the pre-ride checks, you have more chance of getting through subsequent trot-ups!!! Hope this answers some questions...
