[RC] Back checking, why it's done - Tx Trigger

Lucie posted: >>>I totally understand why some vets want the saddles
removed, so they can check for soreness/swelling, wounds on the back and
girth area, it's too easy to hide those things with a saddle on.<<<

If a horse arrives at the ride, with some sort of sore, wound etc. that may
get worst from the tack and saddle, we all know vets will make a note of it
if it is a concern. If it is bad enough, they can not allow the horse to
start. A horse getting a rub in the girth area, is still easy for vets to
check while tacked, as they will still check the girth area, run hands in
front of, behind it. As mentioned, I have seen most of the CT region vets
just lift our saddles, and place their hand up under there to check for
soreness. Some rides we have saddles on for vet checks during the ride, but
removed for final check. Like all regions, the vets learn which riders
might be ones to watch more closely.

Tevis we were required to remove the saddle at only TWO vet checks. They
managed to check the horses well out there at all the other checks while
tacked up. Again, as stated, let the head vets decide what is best for that
ride. No need for a national rule.
