Indeed, the "nuclear waste" problem is largely a red herring, a boogey 
man used to scare people about nuclear power.  The vast majority of what 
is classified as "nuclear waste" from power plants is low-level stuff, 
you could fill your basement with it and have no more exposure than you 
would get from a few airline trips across the country each year.  The 
actually dangerous stuff is surprisingly small, AIUI you could pile all 
of it that's been produced around the world so far in one football stadium.
