It’s about 29 lb - ~2.2 lb/kg. Gas works out to about
$6.63/gallon there. Oddly enough, hay is about the same, maybe a little cheaper
than what we pay, figuring 3 of their bales is about one of ours, so that’s
6 euros/US bale, works out to around $8/US bale, which is a lot cheaper than it
is here in the NW.
But to put things in perspective, we often travel 300 miles (500
km), but range as far as 600 miles (1000 km).
Went through engineering school – it’s a lot of fun
trying to convert Newton-meters to ft-lb, and you’ve never lived until
you start trying to work with power. Some of it is awful enough that it pays to
first convert everything to metric, figure it out, and then convert back for
the answer.

So Leonard, not to sound too parochial, but how many U.S. pounds
are 13 Kgs? (I actually tried to learn the metric system once, but since no one
else was using it, I gave up). Also if gas costs 1.3 euros per
liter, and diesel 1 Euro per liter, how does that translate to the cost of a US
gallon? Finally, do you find that most European horse owners are middle
income, or is horse ownership more an upper income activity? Just
curious. --Dave

Hi,
Your
discussion about the cost of gas or diesel is funny. In Europe (some variations
from country to country), one liter of gas costs 1.3 euros while one liter of
diesel costs 1 euro. change between euro and dollar : one euro costs 1.35
US$
We
try to avoid too long trips most of the time, but if we draw a circle of 500Kms
around Paris, you can get almost one FEI ride every week-end. From belgium it
is a bit longer as we have to head toward France (or eventually Germany or
Holland). France is most of the time our favorite choice as we get there the
best rides with the highest number of participants (60 to sometimes 150
starters).
A
bale of meadow hay costs around 2 euros for 13Kgs. Stabling a horse in an equestrian
center costs 200 euros/month, but it can be 400 euros in Brussels.
Hope
this helps

: Yes Truman, we don't have BIG Sundowner but some have 4 horses trailers. Most
of endurance riders have a 2 horses trailer. Now in showjumping this is another
business, they do have huge lorries with living quarters, bigger than your
horse trailers. But their horses are more valuable and price money are
different also.
