[RC] horse manure - k s swigart

Carolyn Lodeman said:

A bit of trivia: On RFD tv I watched the other
day the experts said that an average 1200lb
horse produces 50lbs of manure a day ---
9000lbs a year!!

How much a horse's manure weighs depends on how long it has been out of
the horse; since one of its major components is water.

If the average horse eats 20 to 25 pounds of dry matter a day and they
are about 30% efficient as feeders (I don't know if this is true, but it
is a number that I have heard), then a horse's manure will contain about
12 to 18 pounds of dry matter per day.

So on average our smaller endurance horses
would produce less,

Actually, my endurance horses, because they are doing more work and
therefore need more food probably produce MORE manure than the average
horse, despite their smaller stature.

but that still is a lot of body building cleaning stalls.

However, if you leave it to dry out for a while, it becomes much easier
to shift.
