Re: [RC] More on overos - aggiekrisJust FYI - there are actually two types of lethal white. What Lynn described is called Overo Lethal White Syndrome, and is associated ONLY with the frame overo coloration. The other type is Lethal White, which is a result of breeding two genetically white horses together. This white is dominant to all colors and patterns, but *can* occur from two colored parents on occasion. Once present, it is inherited as a dominant gene. The best theory to explain that thus far is a high rate of mutation, last I heard, but I personally think it happens a little too often for that to be true... Also, true roan in some studies has been associated with only a partial lethality, and a small number of roan horses have been shown to be homozygous. This could have changed, last time i did much with this was in Undergrad. Haven't had the time to really follow up on any of it. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
