Thanks for all the info.? I have a sheepskin pad with a cotton top that I think will work.? The sheepskin isn't that thick.? The other pad I have is an Equipedic with 1" inserts (they do compress).? However, I can take the inserts out which would give me a wool bottom and cordura top with no fill.? One of those will hopefully work.
Pretty guy!? He looks stockier than mine (sorry, I'm at work, so no pictures...) but the short back and low withers look similar.? I think my guy has a little bit more wither.?

Here are a couple pictures of my horse.? Note in the trot photo he is trotting down hill, so his front foot may hit first - or appear to.? The other is him in front of our barn, and no his name is not "Diamond at the Barn".? My husband was messing around with the graphics.?

I have the black one, 18", wide.? I use a woolbak pad, and nothing else.? If you do you will displace the fit of the saddle.? If it doesn't fit, then the saddle fitter needs to make it right by stuffing it.? Which will give you a true custom fit.?
Laura -- thanks so much.? You actually just answered questions I didn't know I had.? My fellow is mutton withered too, short-backed and about 14.2 - 14.3? (twins??).? The western tree saddle I have (supposed to be for Arabs...) hangs over his withers, and goes back to his hips.? Just way too long.? Very strange...I weigh 135# as well.? However... I'm 6" shorter than you (sigh) and 15# overweight (double-sigh).
I like the wide panels.? ?Does it also have a wide channel down the gullet?? (finally, a question!)??
My plan is to get the demo saddle and test ride it, and also have a saddle fitter check it for me.??
