Re: [RC] Draft crosses - Barbara McCraryWe bought the horse already competing, very successfully, in ride & tie. He also had done some 50 milers, and we bought him right off of Tevis in 1975, after he placed 16th with his rider. The horse belonged to a rancher, but was being ridden and competed by a couple of young men who lived in the same area. This horse was quite a character. My husband rode him in a series of cavalcades and the horse learned to be quite the ham actor. When my husband was competing with him, he would ride to work, 5 miles over the hills, and put him up for the day in a temporary corral. After work, he would saddle up and take the long way home...total about 18 miles. This...twice a week, then a long 20-30 miles on the weekend. But the horse was already fit and competing, so this was maintenance riding. Doesn't sound like there are many draft crosses out there doing endurance rides (based on replies to this topic). Did your husband train his horse to do endurance? If so, any tips when training a draft cross to do long rides? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
