Re: [RC] grip easy boots - Laney Humphrey

Here is my opinion but please remember that I'm just one person with one horse; hopefully others will chime in too.
I've used both Epics and Bares which each have their own tread pattern. I used Bares last fall during the horrendously rainy & muddy Grand Canyon 5 day ride. Personally, I wouldn't bother getting Gripes unless you ride in constantly wet, muddy, slick conditions. The treads on both Epics and Bares do just fine in mud. When I switch from one boot to the other, I notice that my horse goes a bit cautiously at first but when he gets the tread figured out, he's just fine. He does that within just a few miles.
I think the Gripes were developed for riders in really rainy, wet areas such as the Pacific Northwest and northern Europe. In fact, I think for the ride you are describing that will probably have at least as many rocky parts as muddy, I'd prefer either the Epics or Bares which I think would be better on rocks. And besides, your horse is already used to them.

I was thinking of trying the new grip easy boots on some muddy rides and was wondering if you had to get a horse used to them before doing a ride. I normally ride with easy boots over aluminum shoes on rocky rides since my horse has flat soles and don't want to risk a stone bruise. I don't have any mud where I live to get him used to wearing the grips but the next ride I go to will have rocks and also will probably be muddy. I tried the grips on him and they seemed a little looser than the same size easy boot was. I wonder why this would be? I used the same back strap on the grip as I used on the regular easy boot. Thanks for the info on the grips. Happy Trails, Kathy Crothers
