[RC] aluminum/steel shoes - mrsdHe Have been using alumunum Natural Balance shoes on my trusty 22 Y.O. 3000 mile horse J.S. Bach since 1997 or 98. 11 100's . I do use steel shoes behind and square off and rock the toes with clips. His stride was much better with the Aluminum Shoes. I do pad him with silicone injected and have no problems with thrush. It is very dry where we live and when I pull them I will give the soles & frog a little shot of 7% Iodine and dry before shoeing. Bill Thornburg would always pad his horses for the first ride of the season and would continue to pad for the whole season. He would pull the shoes and leave the horse in a small sandy pen for a day to dry them out. My horse's 100's included 4 Tevis in a row and 2 National Championships. He was tied for MW National Championship in 99 100 miles. Also did Virginia City and 4 Washoe 100's. and finished with plenty of shoes left. I think that the combination of Aluminum with pads have helped keep him sound. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
