Re: [RC] natural horse wormers? - Linda MiramsOn Tue, 10 Apr 2007 10:38:26 -0700, Karla Watson wrote Anyone using natural horse wormers? Like the herbal ones? I'm wondering if they really work and how you know they work unless you fecal test? I am interested to know as I do prefer natural products to chemicals. Where is Dr. House when you need him? The only effective "natural" horse wormer is to have enough acrerage to rotate grazing on your pastures such that the parasite eggs/larvae have a chance to die between the time they are deposited and the time your horses next graze on the same land. In between times, you harrow-the-hell out of the deposited manure to expose the eggs/larvae and, hopefully, fry the little b*****ds in the sun before they can be re-ingested. And of course, this only works with some parasites. If you've got neighbors whose land/animals can act as hosts for fly-born parasites, you are out of luck. The single greatest factor contributing to the longevity of modern horses (routinely 20+ years) vs. horses in the 19th century (routinely die in teens) is modern chemical wormers. Maybe I should tell you the story Mabel Owen told me about what the Old Government Morgan stallion Black Sambo's heart look like when they autopsied him after he keeled over dead in her pasture just shortly after having been rescued from his "natural" (read: completely neglectful) owners.
