RE: [RC] Steph's fallacious arguement (was: glass houses) - Steph TeeterI said what I said because of this one: "or because she wanted to convince people to look to themselves before making sweeping statements," and tho jetlag definitely takes its toll on the 'thinking straight' part I was not trying to mislead or imply anything. I feel very strongly that anybody who thinks that the problems with our sport are just at the FEI level needs to take a very close look at the sport here at home. Our version of the sport is probably most similar to the Australians in our attitude - generally opposed to International (FEI) and generally sane and recreational in our competitive spirit . But I don't think we (AERC) have as good grip on horse health and horse welfare as they do. Australia/New Zealand have log books, so every horse has a competition record that is constantly reviewed, and every horse and rider must qualify in progressively more advanced stages. And horses and riders can be 'down graded' in the level at which they may compete if they have repeated failures. Consequences for serious mistakes, or repeated lameness or metabolic problems. Our rules permit a first time rider to race a first time horse on a 100 mile competition. You have to admit this is a little shaky.... However you want to look at or compare numbers, I don't think we (AERC) have such a pure record as to condemn the way others do the sport. As far as being in the business, I'm also in the 'business' of promoting endurance riding here at home. In the past 7 years I've managed close to 5000 miles of rides - multiday, single day, aerc, fei, it really doesn't matter to me, it's all the same sport. and believe me I don't do it for the compensation! There are all kinds of statistics that would be more valid to look at and give a clearer compariston between the different types of "endurance" than the one that Steph chose to provide (raw number of horse fatalities) which was totally invalid. I don't know whether she deliberately chose one that was so totally invalid because she wanted to con people into thinking that the AERC has a worse horse fatality record than the WEC or because she wanted to convince people to look to themselves before making sweeping statements, or she just wasn't thinking straight and didn't realize that it was a totally invalid comparison to be making. It is important to remember that Steph is in the business of promoting the sport of FEI endurance and that she is being well compensated for doing so. Whatever her motivations for doing so, it doesn't change the fact that her opening argument in her "glass houses" post was a completely invalid argument. Personally, I DO think that it would be well for members of the AERC to look to themselves as well as the what the rest of the world is doing with respect to horse welfare in the sport of endurance (and I think that even comparing death RATES at endurance rides is probably not a very valid comparison, since all the numbers are probably too small to be making statistically valid comparisons). kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
