Hi, I don't know about the Vermont ride specifically. However when I ride at 
night I carry a flashlight to use only if needed. (To alert traffic to me 
being there, to read a pie plate.) Otherwise I just ride in the dark. My 
eyes acclimate to the dark well enough. I also know that my mule/horse sees 
better than I in the dark & I trust her. As far as practicing in the dark, 
we ride at night just for fun. We ride  as ofetn as we can.
