Re: [RC] Shoes for the Rider - orthotics - Sharon LevasseurI'm one of the people Beverley mentioned who buy custom orthotics. My chiropractor has ordered me to never ever ride without them. I don't argue, because if I don't use them my toes go numb after a while. My orthotics have really big supports for all three arch areas... the normal mid-foot arch that everyone thinks of, the one right behind the base of my toes, and the one right in front of my heel on the outside. They are also built up on the inside of the heel because I pronate. Most of those are important only when I walk. It's the arch right behind the base of my toes that keeps them from going numb. -Sharon L. in Maine Quoting Linda Mirams <lbm@xxxxxxx>: On the general principal that one should always questions one's premises... What is the true point and purpose of a steel or plastic instep support in a hiking/riding shoe? What's the theory? Why are they there? Yeah, I know, to "provide support," but support of *what*? Doing *what*? And is what they are "supporting" anything that, in the real world, has any application to a rider going many miles on uneven trail ground?
