RE: [RC] [RC] Marlene's free horse - Juli Jakub

I have to side with Marlene. I rescued a rearing TB a long time ago...some are worth the time if you have the patience and talent to deal with the issues. She would rear to get out of everything...give her leg she'd rear...back her up she'd rear...something scared her she would rear. This little mare also liked to flip herself over, as she fell backwards she would roll one hip and be back on her feet and gone while I was left lying in the dirt! Ah youth! This horse went on to be my very successful Preliminary eventer and a darn good intermediate event horse as well. She also competed successfully in 5 ft. jumpers. After the first year she decided she trusted me and she never has really reared again unless confronted with an abusive situation (she was abused as a youngster before I got her as a four year old). But before I get blasted let me loudly and clearly say that you MUST BE A GOOD ENOUGH RIDER AND TRAINER TO DEAL WITH THESE ISSUES.Horses with these problems need clear, consistent, patient training...they also need someone who can gauge the horses progress appropriately and who know when a horse is a lost cause. This mare obviously wanted to try.. she just needed time and love and patience and correct training to get her past these issues. By the way I still have her at 15 yrs of age...she helps teens who are trying to improve their higher level skills get some mileage and takes kids to their first little events. Rearing horses rear for a variety of issues...you should always be confident you can handle a situation...if not...sell!!

And she could be potentially worth much less than "free". You know Marlene, that rearing is one of the most dangerous things we as riders might ever have to deal with in a horse. PLEASE be careful. No horse, and I mean NO horse is worth getting hurt....or worst over. Hopefully you can rehab this horse. But we often have to stand back and look at some of them and ask if they are indeed worth the risk. Too many good horses out there without issues that could kill us.
