Re: [RC] Owyhee - John Teeter"Cougar Ditch" is the one you cross on the way over around Wild Horse Butte. (well, the 100 mile trail crosses it; the 50 mile trail goes around the end of it and misses that section). That irrigation canal, which is fed by the pumping station at the river, was empty when Steph led the ride through there on the ATC. It was full by the time the riders came through 20 minutes or so later. (hadn't had water in it for 15 years:) -- it was a competitive ride - and not the kind of obsticle you would expect on a challenging 100. I first noticed something when I saw Hal Hall at the Siera del Rio vet check. He was head2toe mud - it was 3' down into the cannel and 3' back up. with water only in it for a brief time (very very slick). it was very difficult with no way around .... cougar ditch - you've seen it dry ... I'm not sure what's up with it this summer - if they've started using it again for real, then we'll have to make the trail stay on the west side of the canal ... jt (50 mile trail: http://www.endurance.net/Oreana/Owyheecanyonlands/maps/ Day3_WildhorseButte.jpg 100 mile trail: (Phase 3 - blue loop) http://www.endurance.net/oreana/arabiannights/course.html http://www.endurance.net/oreana/arabiannights/gallery/tedlewis/ index_10.html and Google Earth to the spot: http://www.endurance.net/Oreana/CougarDitch.kmz =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
