RE: [RC] Credit for 50 miles - heidiWhile I agree that "short" rides are a problem for the very reasons that you stzte, Kat, I have yet to see a GPS come up with mileage even close to what we get with actual odometers in this sort of rough country. So I would not feel the least bit concerned about claiming credit for 50 miles when a GPS only shows 42, as long as the speed that I know I was traveling relates correctly to the time that I took to ride the distance. I've ridden enough well-measured trails to have a good idea of how fast I'm traveling on any given segment, and with accurately-measured mileage, I can usually calculate my time into the next vet check within 5 minutes or so. If I get there 15 or 20 (or more) minutes "early" then I begin to suspect that there is a problem with how the RM calculated/measured the mileage. Heidi Don Huston said:I train for an accurate mileage then when the ride is over and my GPS says 42mi I am happy to get credit for 50mi.Personally, I am not happy to get credit for 50 miles if I know that I have only gone 42. By sanctioning a 42 mile ride as 50 miles, the ride manager has turned me into a liar, has made the AERC's records inaccurate, and consequently makes the collecting of these records meaningless. I would be perfectly happy to do this 42 mile ride as an unsanctioned trail ride (there are plenty of 42 mile rides that I can enjoy the ride), but by telling me (and the rest of the world) afterwards that I have actually done 50 miles takes some of the fun out of it. kat Orange County, Calif. :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
