Re: [RC] Alternate to processed dog food - edna leigh libbyWell, if you search B.A.R.F. (bones and raw food)on google you will get more information than you would ever want. I got the idea from a friend who turned to feeding raw food to her dog after months of struggling with her dogs alergys (hot spots, itching, hair loss, sores)his recovery was so profound I tryied it for my dog with less then healthy kindney function, ulsers and surpressed healing ability. He improved quite a lot in 3 months (it was subsequently discovered that he was hypothyroid and once on the med for that transformed into a new dog). I continued with the raw diet. Bad breath is none existant and the hair coats are amazing! This is my daily routine: Raw whole Turkey necks 1 each 2xday (they have the proper bone to meat ratio-and my dogs are big 78 lbs & 125 lbs--chicken necks are great for little guys) Raw vegie once a day-sometimes twice(toss them a corrot, cucumber, 1/2 a brocoli head each, or slice of butternut squash--these are their favorites) They need organ food once a week as a meal or two (liver, eggs, hearts etc) The extra organ food is not so important if you happen to live near a coast and can get whole herring/ mackrel, other fish really cheap like I do rather than the turkey necks. I put up a freezer full in the fall before the herring boats leave- 10 cents a pound!(Must be feed with heads on and guts intact)it lasts all winter then we go back to the turkey necks in the spring. My guys get meds now so there is a slice of bread with a dab of peanut butter added each day. My vet asked me to write up the recipe for him to hand out when he saw the difference in my dogs. Maybe this will inspire me to get around to it.
