Re: [RC] Mountain Lions and Deer - Barbara McCraryInteresting post. Not too long ago, there was an older couple hiking in Redwood National Park in northern CA, and the husband was attacked by a lion. The wife tried to stab the cat's eyes with a ballpoint pen from her husband's pocket, but the pen broke. Then she picked up a limb and started beating the cat with it. The cat finally gave up and left, but the man was badly mauled. He has had major surgery to repair the damage to his head, face and neck. The articles about this incident all told of how the counter-attack was just what was needed. Otherwise, the man would have been killed.Barbara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Suzanne Boyd" <suzboyd@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, March 19, 2007 6:32 PM Subject: [RC] Mountain Lions and Deer For anyone who is interested in the return of the mountain lion to suburbia, I highly recommend reading David Baron's "The Beast in the Garden". It chronicles the return of the big cats to Boulder, Co. and is an absolutely fascinating read. (I am neither the author, the author's mother nor legal representation for the cats) I've just been fascinated by cougars ever since spotting one in rural central Ohio last summer (despite Ohio's "official" stance that there are no cougars here) and have read everything I can about them. If you ride in Big Cat Country, you should educate yourself about them. If you are ever confronted with a potentially threatening/attacking cougar, don't retreat and don't "play dead". Most cougar attack survivors had to fight tooth and nail to *be* a survivor. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
