Re: [RC] More Whoa Needed - Quentin & Libby Llop

That's a nice concept, but do you really think that any of those calvary
horses stopped for those raw recruits when they heard the bugle play
charge? Remember that any horse off the track has been very thoroughly
trained to lean on a snaffle bit and RUN. Libby

You might like to try the Cavalry Stop.

To teach it, put a halter and lead on your horse and walk beside him.
Walk a few steps and pull the lead rope straight up (you can say Whoa
if you want to) and the horse will stop. Do this several times.
Change sides and walk on the horse's off side and do the same thing.
Then go to your round pen if you can and ride him at the walk and
simply lift one rein up. Change sides and do it again. Horse will
learn it very fast. According to the article in Western Horseman,
this method was developed for Cavalry riders who knew nothing about
horses and had to learn fast how to control them. I love it! No
fears about losing balance as is possible with the one-rein stop. My
boarders are all using this stop now, as am I.
