If you do not already have formal training I suggest:1. Take a good introductory course and/or your one that fulfills your states CCW requirements. This is necessary for safety and knowledge of legalities. Check with gun shops and shooting ranges. If you are a woman, many run special courses for women. 2. Shoot a variety of handguns before making a choice. Many pistol ranges rent handguns. Many of the above courses include trial of a variety of firearms as part of the course. 3. Do not choose on price alone. Higher priced is not necessarily better for defense. On the other hand cheap is not a bargain. Ed PS.
